Book Review: The Calling by Priya Kumar

When you don’t change your state of power, you control over what changes or remains constant around you. The world responds to who you are.

This is my favourite quote from the book The Calling – Unleash your true self. I picked up the book, read the title and started predicting the story by reading the title. I normally do that before starting any novel. The Calling – Unleash your true self. The title is long and deep. So I thought the book will be full of inspirational quotes with short stories. Then I turned the book to find the publisher but ended up reading epitome. After reading the epitome, I came to know that it is a spiritual adventure. I hadn’t read this kind of book earlier. After reading the epitome, I became anxious. I wanted to know how a spiritual adventure will help me in unleashing my true self (as the title suggests).

The Story revolves around a guy called Arjun who lives in Delhi. He is a Marketing Head of a renowned media company. He is totally frustrated with his life. He is not satisfied with his job. He is on the verge of getting divorce. His wife Maya lives separately with their two daughters. There is nothing to cheer for, in his life. He simply wants to end his life. There is only one person whom he can trust and rely on and that person is his best friend Jay. The story starts with the road trip. Arjun decided to drive his car to Shimla where he had to finalise a deal for his company.

While driving up the hill, Arjun was in his own world. His mind was full of thoughts about his fututre with Maya. He called Jay on the way but forgot to fill the fuel in his car’s tank. As a result, he ran out of fuel while driving up the hill and lost control over his car. As he lost control over his car, he met with an accident. Then Arjun’s spiritual journey began. It took him to Hemkund Sahib in Himalayas with transporter called Chandu. There, he was shown the mirror and his soul was awakened. At Hemkund Sahib, Arjun met his calling and he unleashed his true self.

How Arjun reached to Hemkund Sahib from Shimla? Or how he survived that fatal accident? To get the answers of such questions you should read the book because that’s what The Calling is all about. The Calling is all about that spiritual journey. It is very interesting and gripping novel. It will take you in the mountains where you will feel the snow of Himalayas. And in those mountains, in the middle of the snow it will push you to think what the hell are you doing in life? It has light humour which will bring smile on your face. Lastly, it will give you very important message “you will reap what you have sown.

My rating:

I will give this novel 4 out 5 stars. As I mentioned, it is very interesting and gripping novel. It won’t let you skip even a single page. If you skipped even a single due to any reason then you will loose the plot. You won’t understand what happened and why. And I think that’s the feature of this novel. It has very important message for its readers. It will help you in every possible way to unleash your true self. The only reason I didn’t give this novel 5 stars is that, at one stage I felt like “Ah! He is on the verge of dying again?” Otherwise it is a great novel. It will touch your heart and soul.
