Samsung Galaxy M Series or A Series?

Before the launch of Android, I used to be a Nokia addict. After the launch of Android, I have given my loyalty to Samsung. It didn’t happen overnight. It happened after bad experiences with other brands and satisfactory performance by Samsung phones. To date, I haven’t bought any premium phones of Samsung, I have always used mid-range phones. Actually, I have divided the mid-range category into two subcategories. I put phones costing between 25K – 40K in the upper mid-range and below 25K in a mid-range.

Currently, Samsung is expanding two series of mid-range phones. Samsung Galaxy M series and Samsung Galaxy A series. M series is mid-range series. While some of the A-series phones are in the upper mid-range category. At the moment, I am using both M series as well A series phone. So read on, I will give you the basic idea about both so that you can decide which mid-range phone you should buy.

Price

You will get most of the M series phones under 20K, some of them, even under 10K. While most of the A series phones are priced over 20K. Only one or two models of A series are under 20K. A70 series phones come under upper mid-range smartphones. They are priced at around 35K. And in M series, M50 series phones touch the upper mid-range category. You will get them around 25K. A50 series smartphones are also launched in the upper mid-range category around 25K but with time, they come down. A30 series and A20 series fall under the mid-range category. You can get them well under 25K.

Basic Features and Specs

The basic features and specs will be the same in both M and A series. Like, you will 6 GB and 8 GB RAM variants, 128 GB and 256 GB ROM variants. You are going to get 4 rear cameras and a front camera in both M series and A series phones. Moreover, you will get a screen size of around 6 inches in both M series and A series. And the best in class quality of screen. Even the version of Android will also be the same in both M series and A series phones depending on the year in which you are buying the phone. The processor can be different as per the price but there won’t be a huge difference in the performance because of that.

Design

The bar shape is similar in both M series and A series phones. Even the front punch hole camera is placed in the middle of screen in all the phones except one or two smartphones. You will find a similarity in the placement of back cameras as well. The difference is in the type of body and colour combination. You will get attractive textures in most of the A series phones. While simple plastic body in most of M series phones. In most of the M series phones, you will find a fingerprint scanner placed as part of the body. While in A series phones, there is an in-screen fingerprint scanner.

Major Differences

There are some major differences in both these series by Samsung. M series phones possess larger battery than A series phones. Box of A series phones contains better and faster chargers compared to M series phones. Softwares like screen recorder, movie maker and Samsung pay are an integral part of most A series phones. While in most M series phones, you won’t get these features.

We witness newer versions or new generation of smartphones in both series every year. And Samsung is constantly making changes and adding new features in both M series as well as A series smartphones but there is a flow of features. Samsung rub off S series features on A series smartphones first. And then from A series, these features are passed to M series smartphones. One should keep this thing in mind before choosing the smartphone for itself.

Which one to buy and when?

After reading the last point, you would have got a fair bit of idea about which series you should choose. If you want me to pick one smartphone generation from both M series and A series smartphones then I would recommend the Samsung Galaxy A50 series. Yes, they are launched in the upper mid-range category but if you exchange your old phone and wait for the sale period then you can get them under 20K.

You just have to keep track of sales like Big billion days on Flipkart, The Great Indian Sale on Amazon and shopping festival on Samsung Shop. These sales will give you discounts on your cards and the exchange value of your old phone will bring down the price of all the M series and A series smartphones.

  1. Good one. A lot of people do get confused between M and A series. But I’d admit that Samsung has expanded itself quite well. Their M series has been on point to give those Chinese brands a run for their money. I have a M series and a S series at home now ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I agree buddy but one thing I feel Samsung should add in M20 and above generatio and that thing is Samsung Pay. They had provided it in J series earlier which fell under the similar price bracket.

  2. I was thinking of getting a new phone. Your post is so helpful! Thanks for the clarification!

  3. Thanks for the information. I am planning to buy one for myself but was bit confused between 3-4 handsets. This is helpful for me to decide.

  4. I read this post at the right time. For a non-tech person like me, it’s a clear and concise guide. I did see some A series new phones but was wondering about the price. Now I know why!

  5. I was also sailing in the same boat of thoughts when I had a bad experience with other phones. I switched from others to Samsung and opted Samsung A30 as my first phone of little higher range.

  6. I am a die hard fan of Samsung phones and am using my 4th handset from them. This post is really helpful for loyal customers like me to take our right pick.
