On this trip to Amritsar, I tried food everywhere from a stall in a street near golden temple to a five star hotel. Out of those, lunch at Rang Punjab was more of an impromptu affair.
We wanted to visit jallianwala bhag which is near the iconic golden temple. And those who have visited the golden temple know that vehicles don’t go inside the temple. They drop at the nearest point and then you have to walk from there. Our cab driver dropped us at the partition museum which is another must-visit place near golden temple. And in the premises of partition museum, I found out about Rang Punjab. They have used the premises so well that the moment I saw it I wanted to try it.
Ambience
The moment you enter the restaurant you will get the feel of a dhaba. It holds the feel of a dhaba with a modern touch. There are two types of seating. Indoor seating is like a tea shop with partitions in between and outdoor seating is cool with the logo in front. If you had eaten at old dhabas then you would have noticed the jar of candies at the counter. And if you grew up in the 90s then you would have enjoyed those candies. In this outlet of Rang Punjab, there is a section, where they have made the whole station of such jars. Colour of the walls, the racks, the tiles and the flooring, everything in that section is inspired by retro-style dhabas. All those memories related to these candies will start playing in your head as soon as you enter that section. For me, that section was the highlight of the outlet.
Food
I ordered two classic Punjabi dishes: Chhole Kulcha and Rajma Chawal. In different parts of this country, you will find versions of chhole kulche but when you visit Punjab, you expect the best version. Thus, we were expecting the authentic and best version of the dishes at Rang Punjab. And as per our expectations, we were served the authentic version of both dishes.
After tasting them, I search for Amritsari chhole kulche wherever I go. In other words, the food at Rang Punjab was authentic Punjabi food and was served in the best possible manner. The portion size according to the price was also sufficient. If you always prefer restaurants over dhabas and want to have Punjabi food around the golden temple then this outlet of Rang Punjab is perfect for you.
Service
We went to the restaurant with our one-year-old and he was in frolic mode. The restaurant staff welcomed him with a smile on their faces. He was running around picking things up from tables but the staff was very playful with him. They even tolerated his tantrums while having food. When you are going in a restaurant with a toddler and the staff playfully tolerate the tantrums then you don’t expect anything else from the staff of a restaurant.
The food waiting time after the order was normal. When you are served delicious food within the normal waiting time after your order, you are bound to visit that restaurant again. After experiencing their service, if I had stayed in Amritsar longer then I would have visited Rang Punjab again.
Rating
This restaurant is located opposite the famous Bharawan Da Dhaba. Its word of mouth has reached places through social media. So a restaurant opposite a crowd-puller dhaba is a difficult choice. I chose it over dhaba because of my son. I didn’t want to go to the place where there is a rush as he wouldn’t have been comfortable. I must say that I wasn’t disappointed with my choice. In fact, I was highly satisfied with the service and the taste. Yes, the rates were higher than most of the eateries in that area but they maintained the hygiene and authenticity of Punjab.
Honestly, it goes on your preference, you might get a great taste at a comparatively cheaper rate at Bharawan Da Dhaba but Rang Punjab is also worth experiencing restaurant.
