ZEE5 Originals: Tiki Taka Review

Football fanatics simply love the movies on football. So this movie was recommended this movie by one of the friends who love football. He knew that I have a ZEE5 subscription as he had read my ZEE5 articles before (Also read, ZEE5 Archives). He said, “till now, you have recommended movies through your reviews. Today I am recommending this one.” So this one was the exchange of recommendations for me.

When I first saw the poster of this film (on ZEE5), I thought it is a Bengali film as ZEE5 provides quality regional content. Moreover, there were some veteran Bengali actors on it but then I saw the trailer and found out that it is a Hindi film.

#TikiTaka

To start with, the title grabs your attention before anything else. I had no idea that the title of the film is a style of play in football. I thought tiki-taka is a word in the Bengali language.

The Cast

The cast of tiki-taka comprised of new as well as experienced actors. Parambrata Chattopadhyay who is a Bengali film industry veteran and has acted in Hindi films as well is one of the lead actors in the film. He plays the role of a taxi driver named Raju. Apart from Parambrata, another Bengali film industry veteran and Hindi film actor Saswata Chatterjee has played the role of villain, PK in the film. Ritabhari Chakraborty plays the female lead and African national Emona Enabulu plays the second lead in the film. Ritabhari plays the role of an upcoming journalist and the name of her character is bonny. Emona is Khelechi in the film.

Plot

The story is based in Kolkata and revolves around taxi driver Raju and an African national Khelechi. Khelechi lands in Kolkata from a very poor country in Africa to smuggle drugs. He meets taxi driver Raju at the airport. Raju takes him to PK who handles the drug dealings in Kolkata. Khelechi gets scared and runs away from PK’s place without delivering drugs. Khelechi asks Raju to help him get out of this situation. Khelechi was carrying drugs in a football and Raju saw him enjoying football with kids. Thus he got an idea and he introduced Khelechi to (journalist) Bonny as a footballer.

Bonny was looking for a scoop to save her career and Raju told her that Khelechi is coming fresh after a youth world cup. Basically, Raju served a youth world cup star Khelechi on her plate. Bonny introduced Khelechi to the whole city through her newspaper. At that time, a football tournament was going on in Kolkata. Using the passion of people for the sport, Raju pitches Khelechi to two rival clubs for a derby match. Khelechi impresses both the club owners and the fight for a spot in the team begins. On the other hand, PK is after him for the drugs.

Watch the movie to know the result of this chaos.

Review

Considering the plot of the film, I feel the film is based on a true story. It is a sports drama. In other words, it is a comedy movie featuring a sport. It is not a laugh riot but yes, it tickles your funny bone every now and then. Moreover, it represents the passion of people for Indian football. Actor cum director of the film Parambrata is the highlight of the film. Saswata Chatterjee has also done a great job as a villain. The supporting cast helps the lead a lot to tickle the funny bone. It is a treat for football fans. The only thing I feel is that they should have focused more on a derby match. And instead of Tiki-Taka, they should have considered #Goalmaal as the title of the film.

Do watch this sports drama and let me know your thoughts.

  1. Sports-based plots are a refreshing change from the family or crime plots that rife these days. Tiki Taka sounds like a good watch, especially as it combines football and Kolkata.

  2. I had began watching this one but didn’t complete for some reason. Will give this a go since Saswata Chatterjee is an absolute favourite. You can watch more of his films with subtitles or dubbed in Hindi.
